Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry confessed that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school, but started performing as a means to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry go back to California and find work as a stage actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal in which her father was the main character. She played a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite being connected to this character.
