Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. She did not explore acting as a profession after reaching adulthood, as her parents were worried about the detrimental consequences stress can cause. Perry stated she felt nervous to be an actor during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness brought her back to California to return, where she started working on stage. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The part was offered to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the role.
